Background to the Senator Alex Gallacher Road Safety Award
As Senator Alex Gallacher (1st January 1954 - 29 August 2021) was a tireless road safety champion, whose legacy continues to inspire, SARAH created the “Alex Award” in his honour. The Award is presented on 1 January each year to coincide with Gallacher’s birthday, ensuring his contributions remain front of mind.
Established in November 2021 by Safer Australian Roads And Highways, “the Alex” now honours Australian unsung heroes in road safety, while also celebrating and remembering Senator Gallacher’s life and work.
Senator Gallacher served in the Australian Senate for over a decade and was deeply committed to reducing road fatalities and improving transport safety for all.
