Peter Frazer, Founder and President of the SARAH Group, has been awarded The Order of Australia, Meritorious and Military Award Medal for service to the advancement of road safety both nationally and internationally on the Australia Day 2022 Honours List.
On 15 February 2012, Peter’s daughter Sarah was killed in a completely avoidable road crash in Sydney. A month later he and his family established the Safer Australian Roads and Highways Group (SARAH) and over the past decade, Peter has since dedicated his life to improving road safety outcomes through policy development, community education, and advocacy work.
A key achievement was realised in September 2019, when the NSW Government brought Sarah’s Rule into law that mandates drivers must slow down to a set speed and move over at a car crash, when an emergency service vehicle has lights flashing or if someone has broken down.
To increase community engagement and influence drivers’ behaviour, Peter established National Road Safety Week in 2013 which is now a key annual event in Australia supported by Federal, State and local Government; emergency services; road trauma and support groups and key traffic and fleet organisations.
At an international level, Peter is the Oceania member on the Advisory Board for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (FEVR) and a board member of the International Road Victims’ Partnership. He was Chair of the inaugural International Road Victims Conference in Ireland in 2018.
Peter is also a presenter for the Traffic Offenders Intervention Programme and a volunteer firefighter with the New South Wales Rural Fire Service.
